The golden griot: finding identity through fine art.
AOS Family,
This marks the first blog post for Anu Oro | Studio. Firstly - thank you for visiting.
It’s been a few months since the official re-launch, so thought it best to open our dialogue with a heart-to-heart about Anu Oro | Studio & my vision as aN EMERGING contemporary artist.
At the onset of the pandemic, I took a hiatus from sharing artwork with the public. While the world slowed to an agonizing halt, I sought the best way to align my creative practice with the personal & spiritual aspects of my life.
During this time, I reflected, laughed, wept & created. It felt cathartic to let ideas unfold without looming deadlines or other events ahead.
in this season, a clearer vision for Anu Oro | Studio began to form. This vision was one of a sacred space that marries the worlds of spirit, craftsmanship, fine art & intentional design.
as The pieces of this vision continue to come together, I now feel guided to share one of my newest paintings ON CANVAS, entitled “Griot”. THIS WORK IS A PART OF “OUTRENOIR”, A MONOCHROMATIC SERIES THAT RELIES HEAVILY ON ABSTRACTION TO COMMUNICATE BOLD identity.
In West Africa, the word griot refers to a historian/storyteller who is responsible for keeping the oral history of the tribe. Inspired by this rich tradition, the painting “Griot” carries the essence of an ancient yet contemporary storyteller.
This artwork was created with matte black & white acrylic paint & gold leaf. Deviating from my usual approach to composition, hints of green pastel can be found throughout. it also transcends limitations, easily complimenting a myriad of spaces; ranging from gallery walls to thoughtfully curated interiors.
With the work I share, I encourage my supporters to begin exploring new facets of their identities by reflecting on their inner narratives & lived experiences.
Feel free to send me a message about this statement artwork or share pieces from your art collection that best embody your identity (links below).
